My outlets aren’t working. Can you help?
Answer:
It can be very frustrating when an outlet stops working, but sometimes it’s an easy fix that you can handle on your own.
First, unplug all cords from the outlet that isn’t working and then check to see if the GFCI outlet nearby needs to be reset. What is a GFCI? A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can help prevent electrocution by sensing if a person’s body is starting to receive a shock and cutting off the power before the individual can get injured. GFCIs are generally installed where electrical circuits may accidentally come into contact with water. They have a light indicator and a reset button. If the dead outlets are located in the kitchen, bathroom, garage or outside, go to each GFCI outlet, unplug any cords that are plugged into the outlet and then press the “reset” button until it clicks. Simply clicking the reset button may restore power to the outlet you’re concerned about.
Next, check to see if a circuit breaker has tripped by locating your breaker panel. Look at your panel for a breaker that is now in the “off” position or between “on” and “off.” Some breakers even have a light that will show up if your breaker has been tripped. If it’s placed in between, move the breaker to the “off” position before returning it to the “on” position. If it’s already over to the “off” side, switch it on, off, then back on to fully reset it. This will restore power. If it doesn’t, you may want to flip your breaker an additional time. If a circuit breaker has tripped, reset it to the “on” position.
If you take these steps, you could save yourself some money by fixing the power outage yourself. Although, if you have gone through these simple troubleshooting steps yourself and the problem still exists, you may have a more complicated problem in your electrical circuit. Call KC Electrical Services and we will repair the trouble quickly.
